Intent

At SS Peter and Paul, our Science curriculum aims to give all children a strong understanding of the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to support them in thinking scientifically and understanding scientific processes.

Our children develop their scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific teaching of biology, chemistry and physics-based topics. Our children develop their understanding of the natural world, processes and methods of science through experiencing different types of scientific enquiry that encourage curiosity and provide opportunities for children to ask and answer scientific questions about the world around them.

Implementation

Science is planned and taught in topic blocks to enable the achievement of a greater depth of knowledge. Through our planning, we include problem solving opportunities that allow children to follow their own lines of enquiry.

All children are encouraged to develop and use a range of skills including observation, planning and investigation. They are encouraged to question the world around them and become independent learners by exploring possible answers for their questions.

During lessons, children are encouraged to talk like Scientists by using a range of technical language. Our curriculum reflects the importance of using spoken language to articulate scientific concepts clearly and precisely.

We also provide our children with wider opportunities in science by making links with other STEM subjects. Links with our Design and Technology curriculum enables children to apply their scientific knowledge and understanding to practical Design and Technology projects. Furthermore, children have opportunities to apply their mathematical knowledge to their understanding of Science through the collection, presentation and analysis of data.

Impact

Children enjoy and are enthusiastic about science in our school, this is shown through our pupil voice responses and well attended Science club. Our children’s work shows a range of topics and evidences a broad curriculum coverage.

Feedback from teachers has impact on our pupils with next step questions pushing learning on. We provide opportunities for outdoor learning through workshops, trips and visiting experts providing our children with the understanding that science has changed our lives and is vital for the world’s future prosperity. Children learn the possibility for careers in science as a result of our links with agencies such as STEM ambassadors and Wolverhampton University.
