Congratulations to all of our Year 6 children on their Confirmation last night. A wonderful occasion witnessed by friends, family and staff.
We all enjoyed a wonderful day at SS Peter and Paul celebrating World Book Day. All the children and staff have attended school dressed as their favourite book characters. We started the day by inviting parents in to school in the morning to read with their children. In Year 3, a parent shared a book in her home language (which the children all enjoyed).
Next also enjoyed a school assembly, where each class shared their Reading for Pleasure text. Later in the afternoon, the children swapped classes to share their favourite books with others. A lovely day in school all round!
Sarah Baker, author of ‘The Catapult Kid’, visited several classes at SS Peter and Paul on Friday to read her book to the children. We all thoroughly enjoyed her visit.
Year 5 had the privilege of meeting author Alan Gibbons this week, as part of our celebrations around World Book Day. Alan has written over 60 books and won many prestigious awards such as the Blue Peter Award for ‘The Book I Couldn’t Put Down’, the Angus Book Award and the Stockport Book Award. He has also been shortlisted twice for the Carnegie Medal and his books have been published into dozens of languages.

Yesterday morning, some of our parents came in to join their children in making pancakes for Shrove Tuesday. Here are some pictures of them in action. Thank you to all the parents that joined us!
Children in Year 6 are collecting used batteries for recycling as one of their ideas to help our school be more environmentally friendly. There are collection buckets in each classroom. Hadi, in Year 6, made his own presentation to share in assembly to educate others about saving energy. Well done to him, please support their efforts by bringing old batteries in.
Pupils in Key Stage 2, who applied to help improve road safety and parking on our road, began their duties by letting all of our neighbours know what the plans are going to involve. Next half term they will be training with the Safe Outside Schools team before beginning patrols. Now the weather is improving, help us all stay safe by walking to school more often.
Yesterday, Monday 4th February 2019, we received a wonderful letter from Rt Hon Damian Hinds, the Secretary of State for Education. He has congratulated our staff and pupils on the very high level of progress that pupils demonstrated in Key Stage 2 last year.
The letter states that our school is amongst the top 3% of schools in England for progress between Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2! What fabulous, encouraging news to receive as we look forward to achieving high standards again this year.
Our Principal, Mrs Byrne, has conveyed this exciting news to our pupils in a special assembly this morning. All pupils are enjoying extra Golden Time to celebrate this afternoon.

Yesterday, Dr Mark R Smith, who studies astrophysics, came to meet our year 5 children to discuss our solar system. This linked in well with their current topic in science of ‘The Earth, Moon and Sun’.
The children were fascinated by the information shared, and also demonstrated their own knowledge with Dr Smith. The children actually ran out of time as they had so many questions, so Dr Smith kindly provided his email for any follow up questions from the children. Dr Smith commented, “The children and staff are very enthusiastic and the children are very knowledgeable about space related topics – a worthwhile visit’.
A special event to put in the diaries… On February 10th, the Moon and Mars will be in conjunction. This will mean that between 5:40 pm and 11:35 pm, if you look in a South West direction you will be able to see the Moon and Mars without the aid of a telescope.
Thanks to our Science Lead – Miss Field – for arranging this visit.
