Year 5 Wolverhampton Maths Challenge

By Mr J Morgan21st March 2018

Yesterday, four of our Year 5 children attended a city maths challenge event at Wolverhampton Girls High School.

The children were split into two teams and had to answer several challenges and were given 8 minutes to solve each problem.

21 schools attended from across Wolverhampton and Walsall with 64 teams competing. I am extremely pleased to share that our children performed fantastically well. One team finishing 13th out of 64 places and the other team finishing 32nd out of the 64 teams.

We were also one of the top performing Catholic schools in the city. The children will receive a certificate during this week’s Praise Assembly to celebrate their wonderful performance.

This just reinforces the fact that we have many talented mathematicians here at SS Peter and Paul.

We hope to send some Year 4 children to a similar competition in the Summer term.

Year 4 Love Reading!

By Mr J Morgan12th March 2018

Year 4 produced a wonderful class assembly on Friday morning – dedicated to how important reading is to them. This was particularly appropriate as were celebrating our rearranged World Book Day in school so the hall was awash with everyone’s much loved book characters.

The children spoke about their favourite stories, acted out some of their favourite parts and sang a wonderful song about how there is a book for everyone. This really was a fantastic assembly; enjoyed by parents, staff and the children.

Well done to all the children, Miss Aldridge and Mrs Bellavia for a lovely assembly.

Tag Rugby Sub City Finals

By Mr J Morgan12th March 2018

On Thursday 8th March, our school participated in the Tag Rugby Sub City Finals event at Smestow Secondary School.

There were 8 schools participating – split into two leagues, and the top schools would qualify for the City Finals on Monday 26th March at Wolverhampton Rugby Club.

We were very fortunate to be joined by an ex pupil – Ruby Cochrane – who has been volunteering to help support the club. Our first game was against Bhylls Acre and it was very closely fought, with us losing 6-5. Our second league game was against Villiers Primary school and we continued to play well – winning 4-2. The final league game was against St Stephens, who had started with the same results as us. This was a close match and finished 3-3. Amazingly, we finished 2nd in our group due to the amount of tries we had scored.

This then meant we were playing for the top four positions overall. We had to play the team that topped the other league, which was Uplands. The children (already ecstatic with finishing second in the group) carried on their fine form and won 5-4 to earn the right to play for 1st or 2nd place. Their next game was a repeat of their first against Bhylls Acre and despite a strong performance – Bhylls Acre won 3-1. A really strong performance from SS Peter and Paul, who are playing the best rugby for years. We go into the Finals event in a few weeks full of confidence. Well done to all the children involved and thank you to all the parents who came to support.

End of an Era!

By Mr J Morgan5th March 2018

Wednesday 28th February was a sad day at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Primary Academy –  Mrs Dawn McTurk, who had been our crossing lady for 16 years, retired.

Dawn has been such a valuable member of our school community helping the children to safely cross the road while also being the first welcoming face in the mornings to our pupils. Dawn has gone above and beyond her post by also helping the school in our Breakfast Club, helping set our club up and also playing with the children in the mornings.

We had a special assembly on Wednesday afternoon, where we presented Dawn with a card and gift off the staff. We also presented her with an award off everyone involved with the school for her ‘Outstanding contribution to the Community’.

Dawn is now going to become a lunchtime supervisor at a school local to her home. We wish her all the best – our schools loss is definitely their gain.

NSPCC Buddy Workout

By Mr J Morgan28th February 2018

Last Friday, the children participated in the NSPCC Buddy Workout Day to raise money for the NSPCC. The children had a half an hour slot where they had to do continuous physical activity. Some classes danced for 30 minutes and some classes did a gym workout! Don’t worry the teachers also got involved; leading the children in the physical activity.

Please send in the money raised by your child as soon as possible.

Storytelling Fair

By Mr J Morgan26th February 2018

Our first ever Storytelling Fair at SS Peter and Paul’s was a huge success! Thank you so much to all of the parents who attended and for your valuable feedback. The children were an absolute credit to the school and performed their poems and songs, which they had created with John Edgar (a local storyteller), with great enthusiasm and confidence. What a fantastic event which showcased all of the children’s hard work and our Talk for Writing approach. Events like these help our children to develop a real love for reading, which will also support them with their writing, because ‘If you can say it, you can write it.’

Many thanks to Mrs Walker for organising this wonderful community event.

Quicksticks Festival

By Mr J Morgan13th February 2018

Last night, eight of our Year 5 children participated in a ‘Quicksticks’ Hockey festival at Aldersley Leisure Village.

The children were split into two teams and competed in games against other schools around Wolverhampton. Our ‘A’ team, played three games winning 3-0, losing 4-1 and then winning their final game 1-0. There were some great performances – including the top goal scorer for the team – Kacper.

Our ‘B’ team competed in 4 games and were unlucky to lose their first two games 2-0. However, they improved in the last two games, losing 1-0 and then 3-1 in their final game – despite deservedly scoring their first goal by Madison.

The children all improved with every game, thoroughly enjoyed themselves and showed great sportsmanship – which is all you can ask for.

Thank you to all the parents that came to support their children representing our school.

Pancake Making in Early Years

By Mr J Morgan13th February 2018

Today we welcomed many parents and carers into early years to make pancakes with their children. They were able to choose a healthy fruit topping, and the pancakes were then devoured by the children with great enthusiasm. Parents commented “thank you so much for inviting us to join in with this today, we have really enjoyed it.”

A wonderful community event !  Thank you to our Early Years leader – Mrs Murphy – for organising.

Last Thursday, some of our year 1 and 2 children were selected to represent the school in a Multi-skills event. They were split into teams of boys and girls and had to complete a number of different activities that would test their balance, coordination, speed and agility.

The children did extremely well and finished with a combined score of 1023 points! Each child received a certificate, which was presented during praise assembly.
