As a School of Sanctuary we are proud to incorporate refugee week into our curriculum annually. This year the theme is ‘Courage’ and pupils across the school have been creating art work and poetry connected to the theme. Some of this work was on display in the Civic Centre today at an event bringing schools together to share the work they are doing. Representatives from Year 3 attended the schools event and took the stage to read their class collaborative poem ‘Courage is Kindness’ . This poem demonstrates pupil’s understanding that each person is made in the image and likeness of God.

Courage is Kindness       by Year 3

Courage is not always loud,
It’s the behaviour that makes us proud.
Sometimes it is small and true,
In the little things we choose to do.

When someone new comes through the door,
We smile, say, “Hello!” and never ignore .
A welcome helps them feel they belong,
And kindness makes a friendship strong.

If someone is left out of a game,
We ask them in and learn their name.
It takes some courage, brave and bright,
To stand up for what is right.

When people are treated unfairly,
We speak up kindly, strong and clearly.
We  know that everyone should see
That all are equal, just like you and just like me.
